URBANIZATION AND TRAFFIC PROBLEMS

Every day, many people are dying/injured in road accidents mainly in the fast growing cities like Bangalore due to congested roads, bad road conditions, haphazard and erratic traffic. A little care and caution by the road users can prevent such accidents.

As per the Police Department statistics - the casualties in the last three years at Bangalore city is -

The population of the growing metro cities like Bangalore, is increasing day by day due to migration of people from small towns and villages in search of jobs, better education etc. This apart there will be steady flow of people to the cities for various needs, such as shopping, business, attending courts, higher offices, for different functions and better medical treatments.

This has resulted in heavy movement of vehicles and people, causing severe traffic jams in cities like Bangalore. The traffic problems will be severe especially during peak hours when one can see traffic jams more than a kilomenter long at important traffic junctions.

As we do not have dependable public transport in place, people are buying personal vehicles especially two and four wheelers, as bank loans are easily available to the salaried employees. Thus, every day thousands of new vehicles are added to the already existing huge number of vehicles on the city roads.

The authorities as well as the public are equally responsible for the traffic problems faced in fast growing cities. Much of the problem can be mitigated if the road users follow some simple steps.

• Travelling public must make use of public transport as for as possible

• Plan shopping, social visits etc., of less importance during non peak hours of traffic.

• People living in community housing such as apartments can resort to car pooling which will be cost effective.

• Employees working in big companies / offices can also follow car pooling, wherever they are not provided with transportation facilities.

• Transport authorities must provide dependable transport facilities and must train their staff to behave well with the passengers, as in developed countries.

• Police authorities must take stringent steps to discipline the Auto-rikshaws which apart from two wheelers, have become a menace to the pedestrians and commuters, as they move on footpaths and in between heavy vehicles at high speed.

• Authorities must ensure construction and proper hygienic maintenance of foot over bridges / under bridges at convenient places for safe passage of pedestrians.

• Pedestrians must avoid haphazard crossing of roads and ensure crossing at 'zebra' crossings only.

• The drivers of heavy vehicles especially road transport buses must be quite considerate of other road users particularly about the two wheeler drivers and pedestrians.

• Lastly, every road user whether drivers or pedestrians must get acquainted with the road rules and follows them strictly.

Every road user must realize that not only their lives but the lives of others are also precious. By following these simple rules we can be safe while on the roads and mitigate the urban traffic problems to a great extent.
